CREATA (2023-2025)

Creata has been nominated for the 2025 Performance Art Award by the Greek Theatre Critics Association.

Creata is an interdisciplinary performance by Fanis Sakellariou that combines visual performance, installation art, and live sound composition. Drawing from pagan and Christian cosmogonies, Greek Easter traditions, ritual structures, and domestic technologies, the work investigates creation as an act of sacrifice, transformation, and violence. It examines the relationship between ancient creation myths and contemporary experience, questioning what it means to become human and whether violence remains embedded within the systems that shape us.

In a ruined techno-sacred space, two Holy Monsters – the last remnants of a primordial species – prepare for a strange Easter Sunday. They sacrifice themselves to bring forth the human from flesh and from light.
Household appliances become ritual instruments in a brutal Easter liturgy: an electric knife, a blender, a grill, and a washing machine process synthetic meat through a sequence of symbolic transformations, where sacrificial rites collide with contemporary domestic technologies.

Rather than reconstructing ancient creation myths, Creata uses them as a framework through which to examine the foundations of human existence. Through the image of the Holy Monsters, the work reflects on creation as an act that is simultaneously sacred and violent, fragile and necessary. It proposes failure not as the opposite of creation, but as one of its conditions, honouring those who continue to create meaning from fragments, ruins, and inherited wounds.

What does it mean to create with what remains?

Combining visual performance, installation art, theatre, and live sound composition, Creata transforms everyday objects, domestic technologies, and bodily actions into elements of a contemporary ritual. The performance develops through a continuous process of material and sonic transformation, where machines become instruments of sacrifice, noise becomes chant, and fragments become forms. Through the convergence of body, object, sound, and light Creata stages creation not as a triumph over collapse, but as an act of persistence within it.
